Smith Monroe GANN
During his lifetime, Smith lived in Ivan, South Bend, Tonk Valley and Graham. He worked as a teamster with freight wagons and with stump pullers in clearing new ground in Stephens and Young Counties. He was also a trucker and kept the ranchers supplied with cattle feed, especially through the winter when cake would be in such a demand. In his early years he also worked with his brothers as a butcher. Especially during the oil field boom days around Ivan, Caddo and Breckenridge, they would supply fresh meat to the oil field camps, boarding houses, and grocery stores. Smith married Zelma May MARTIN, daughter of George Henry MARTIN and Maggie May FORCE, on May 16, 1920 in South Bend, Texas. (Zelma May MARTIN was born on February 16, 1902 in Somerville Co., Texas, died on January 18, 1989 in Young Co., Graham, Texas and was buried in Veale Creek Cemetery, Stephens Co., Texas.) |
